The rhythm of the Pacific surf

Early morning sunlight washes over the warm walls, casting a soft, golden light throughout the room.

The gym equipment gleams with hints of bluish-gold in the bright light. Alice walked in and put her bag with work clothes into a locker. Today, she needed an early start and a clear head before going downtown into the office and jumping into her case with the Columbians. What started as a small pre-trial motion had escalated into a huge, convoluted case involving drugs, money laundering, and suspected terror-financing channels with Hezbollah.

After a few minutes, the class empties out.

She sees Bob and smiles, “Hey”,

I smile back, “Hey”.

Alice, “How was it?”

“It was …intense. Sol is tough. I’m hitting the beach for a swim”.

Alice, “Good for you, Bob, I could never do CrossFit. I’ll walk with you”.

They walk in silence to the beach. The crunch of sand underfoot and their own thoughts.

“You know, we need to talk. I feel worthless. We had a major release of the system last week and my entire team is down. I don’t know what’s going on”.

Alice, “I agree. You go swim, clear your head. I have to get in my reps. We’ll carve out time to talk”.

We stand by each other for a moment. 

As we stand together, the rhythm of the Pacific surf is background to our moment.  Her shampoo—a blend of jasmine and vanilla stirs a warmth in me.
